THE BIG RED TRUCK FULL OF YOUR FAVOURITE TOOLS

A Brief History and Introduction

I am gunna tell ya a story now …….. back in the day I did a project in Germany, building mineral  water conveyor lines in a factory near Waldorf, Heidelberg region. It was a company founded and owned by a Director Klaus, speaking very good English I inquired where he learnt the Lingo…..USA he said ” I was brought up in Milwaukee”. Always stuck in my mind and whilst researching for this posting I learnt that Milwaukee, Wisconsin was the American location of German immigration from the 19th Century onwards.

It was called the  “German Athens” and they dominated the local political scene, industries especially engineering, breweries and food products. Anyway I digress I will get back to the subject in hand.

The Milwaukee Tools

From the Ashes: The Birth of a Giant (1924)

The story actually begins with a fire. In 1923, a fire destroyed the A.H. Petersen tool company. A.F. Siebert, a former employee, purchased the remaining assets and founded the Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation in 1924. Their first claim to fame? The Hole-Shooter, the first lightweight, one-handed $1/4$-inch capacity drill. It was a game-changer for the automotive and metalworking industries.

Innovation Through the Decades

Milwaukee didn’t just make tools; they solved specific job-site problems.

  • 1949 – The Right-Angle Drill: They invented the first tool designed to let plumbers and electricians drill holes in tight spaces between studs.

  • 1951 – The Sawzall®: This was a revolution. It was the first portable electric hacksaw, featuring a reciprocating mechanism that remains the industry standard today.

  • 1970s – The Hole Hawg®: They introduced high-torque drills specifically designed for large-hole boring in residential construction.

The Lithium-Ion Revolution

While they had decades of success, the “modern” Milwaukee was born in 2005. They were the first major manufacturer to use Lithium-Ion battery technology in power tools.

Before this, most cordless tools used Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) batteries, which were heavy and lost power quickly. Milwaukee’s V28 technology paved the way for the M12 and M18 systems that dominate the market today.

Milwaukee Today: Tech & Solutions

In 2005, the company was acquired by Techtronic Industries (TTI). Since then, they have shifted from being just a “tool company” to a “solution provider.”  As befits a company with the slogan ” NOTHING BUT HEAVY DUTY “, they concentrate on suitable tools for the Professional Blue Collar trades. The “Red” brand (Milwaukee) has cultivated a massive, almost cult-like following among professionals because they focus on “system-wide” solutions rather than just individual tools, you’re talking about the heavy-duty gear that actually keeps a factory or shop floor running.

  • FUEL™ Line: Their premium brushless motors that deliver corded power in a cordless format.

  • One-Key™: A digital platform for tool tracking, security, and performance customization.

  • PACKOUT™: A modular storage system that has gained a cult-like following for its durability and versatility.

What Made Milwaukee Famous: The Tools That  “Made a User Out of Me”

While the brand has a tool for every job, these four are the workhorses that prove why Milwaukee is the industry standard for industrial maintenance.

1. The M18™ Cordless Grease Gun

As mentioned in my [previous post on robotic line lubrication], this isn’t just a luxury—it’s a precision instrument. In a world of automated lines, hitting every grease point with the correct pressure (up to 10,000 PSI) ensures your robots don’t see an early grave. It’s the difference between a 10-minute PM and an hour-long headache.

2. The M18 FUEL™ Hammer Drill

When it comes to anchoring machinery, the floor bolts are your foundation. This drill handles masonry and concrete like it’s butter. If you’ve ever fought a corded drill across a 50,000-square-foot facility, you know why the M18 platform made a user out of me.

3. The M18 FUEL Hackzall® (The “No-Permit” Solution)

This is where the history of Milwaukee meets the reality of the modern job site. Cutting off old floor bolts usually means a grinder, which means sparks, which means a Hot Work Permit with lots of paperwork and Managers signatures,  plus fire blankets and fire watchers. Just a Note of Caution, I have used this product on several sites where I had to cut-off floor bolts flush with the floor and have always asked whether I can use without a Hot Work Permit and most analysed and said that was fine, but I have found where a Safety Officer still wanted the full  Hot Work Permit and fire blankets/fire watcher in place, so my advice is to always check with first the POC (Person of contact) and they may refer you to the Site Safety Officer.

The Pro Move: Swapping the grinder for a M18 FUEL™ Reciprocating Saw with a Torch™ Carbide Teeth blade. It’s a cold-cut solution that saves you the paperwork and the fire hazard while slicing through hardened steel bolts in seconds.

4. The M12™ & M18™ Impact Wrenches

From loosening seized bolts on a conveyor to tightening down new installs, the torque-to-weight ratio on the FUEL™ impacts is what keeps most technicians on “Team Red.”

What is the Best Solution for me ?

Choosing between Milwaukee’s Fuel line and their standard Brushless line is basically deciding between “maximum performance” and “smart value.”

For a long time, “Fuel” was the only way to get a brushless motor from Milwaukee. Now that they offer a mid-tier “Standard Brushless” line, the choice is a bit more nuanced. Here is the breakdown of why you’d pick one over the other.

1. The Power Gap (Torque & Speed)

This is the biggest differentiator. While both use brushless technology to improve battery life, the Fuel models use the POWERSTATE™ motor, which is physically beefier and tuned for raw output.

Fuel (Top Tier): Designed for high-demand tasks like drilling 4″ self-feed bits through studs or driving massive lag bolts. For example, a Fuel Impact Driver often delivers 2,000+ in-lbs of torque.

Brushless (Mid Tier): Designed for “standard” construction and DIY. That same impact driver in the standard brushless line might top out at 1,500–1,600 in-lbs. It’s plenty for a deck screw, but it might struggle with a 6-inch structural screw.

2. “Intelligence” (RedLink vs. RedLink Plus)

Both tools have computer chips that talk to the battery, but the Fuel chips are “smarter.”

Fuel: Features RedLink Plus™. This system manages heat much more aggressively. If you are pushing the tool hard, the Fuel model will electronically manage the power to prevent the motor from burning out, whereas the standard brushless might just cut out or get dangerously hot.

Standard Brushless: Uses basic RedLink™. It protects against overloads, but it doesn’t have the same “thermal management” that allows you to work all day in extreme conditions.

3. Build Quality & Features

The Chuck/Clutch: Fuel drills almost always feature an all-metal chuck for better grip and durability. Standard brushless models sometimes use high-quality plastic or hybrid chucks.

Size: Interestingly, Fuel models are often smaller. Because the components are higher quality and more efficient, Milwaukee can pack more power into a shorter tool head (great for tight spots).

Special Modes: Fuel tools often have 4-mode drive control (including “Self-Tapping Screw Mode”), while standard brushless models usually only have 1 or 2 speeds

Comparison Table: M18 Fuel vs. M18 Brushless

The Verdict: Which should you buy?

Go for the “Standard Brushless” if:

  • You are a homeowner or a DIYer doing renovations, furniture building, or general maintenance.
  • You want the long battery life of a brushless tool without the “pro” price tag

  • .You value a lighter tool for overhead work and don’t need to drill through 4×4 posts all day.

Go for the “FUEL” if:

  • You make your living with your tools.

  • You are performing heavy-duty tasks (large hole saws, long structural fasteners, concrete drilling).

  • You want the “Buy Once, Cry Once” security of owning the most powerful version available.

  • You need the most compact head size possible for tight spaces.

PRO-TIPS  to consider,   Once you purchase the Charger & Batteries the “Tool Only” or (Bare Tool ) option becomes a much cheaper option, so it is worth considering the Starter Options.

Milwaukee are not cheap products, they are probably the Power Tools equivalent of hand tool brand Snap-on, with this in mind one must consider the ROI (return on investment) meaning less time getting tools repaired equals more earning potential or less production line downtime.

Milwaukee Tools carry a 5 year warranty (USA Some products )    UK & Europe (can be 1-3 years subject to product & conditions).

One final tip: If you buy Fuel tools, try to use High Output (HO) or Forge batteries. The Fuel motors are designed to “pull” more juice than standard batteries can provide, so you won’t actually see the full power of a Fuel tool unless you pair it with a high-output battery!

Milwaukee don’t just upgrade old tools, they look and listen to the Trades to see the problems they are encountering on site (Tool wise) and build a new product to overcome it, ” DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION “
